December 2009
Tree 2009Throughout Advent we were considering Jesus as 'the light of the World'.

Hence we began with a Tree decorated simply with white Christmas lights.

Over the weeks we used the symbolism of 'Traffic lights' to explore this theme in relation to the lighting of our Advent Candles.

On the First Sunday of Advent, having lit an Advent candle, we placed silver discs decorated with a picture of a candle on our Christmas Tree. This was to remind us of Jesus, 'Light of the World', who shows us the ways of God's Kingdom which, we wait and work for.

On the Second Sunday of Advent, having lit 2 Advent candles, we placed Orange discs decorated with the picture of a town crier on our Tree. This was to remind us of the Prophets who call us to 'get ready' for change. Faith prepares us to take appropriate action,: refusal to 'slow down', or reckless 'speeding on', may harm us and others.

On the Third Sunday of Advent, having lit 3 candles, we placed Red discs decorated with pictures of locusts and honey on our tree. This was to remind us that John The Baptist called people to 'Stop' inappropriate, harmful and hypocritical behaviour.

On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, having lit 4 candles, we placed Green discs decorated with a Picture of Mary on our tree. This was to remind us of Mary's willingness to 'Go for it' with God. We are invited to give our 'yes' and share the adventure of faith with our Lord.

On Christmas day we lit our final Advent Candle. Celebrating the awaited birth of Jesus, and confirming our trust in him as Light of the World.
